KNOCK THE HUSTLE author starts Katrina Relief
(September 2, 2005) Chicago, IL Hadji Williams, noted hiphop writer, social critic and ad industry vet is donating 20% of every sale of his latest book KNOCK THE HUSTLE: How to save Your Job and Your Life from Corporate America (ISBN#1-932523-00-6) from now until Dec. 31, 2005 to the Red Cross to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
Like many black Chicagoans Williams has southern roots. “My pops and my moms are from Mississippi. We still have cousins and ‘auntees,’ and all manner of peoples down there… and we haven’t been able to get through to any of them all this week. So I’m giving what I can to help.”
Williams believes the hiphop community particularly the more affluent among us need to do more in times like these. “It’s not enough to simply buy an artist’s music or cop someone’s style. We need to care more about each other, which includes reaching out during crisis, whether it be thru donations, prayers, physical labor or thru whatever means are at your disposal.”
Williams also believes Katrina was a political wake up call for the hiphop community. “Do you realize that they sent in police and National Guards before they sent food and medicine? The media spent 4 days painting most folks down there as either looters, curiously angry savages or anonymous brown things… Gas stations were charging $5-$6 a gallon by Wednesday night… and as of Thursday–some four days after the storm left, not one government official has stood up and assumed a leadership role!? Think about some of this stuff next time someone asks, “Why should I bother voting?”
