Is Christianity Forced Upon Children in School?

The other day my children came home with Easter baskets they made in school. I was like WTF? Yeah, they do the requisite Christmas stuff in December, but for some the baskets struck something in me…and made me think about how this simple act is symbolic of the grip of Christianity on this country.

I’m fully aware of the spiel: Founding fathers = Christian hence America = Christian. They weren’t my damn Founding Fathers! And Christianity is not my religion. So where do I fit in?

My children brought home no Ramadan crafts, but they did make a paper Kwanzaa kinara, which is pretty amazing considering where we live. And I think they did a coloring sheet that had dradles on it.

But besides the big three – Judaism, Christianity and Islam, why aren’t other religions represented in schools? You can’t even mention Wicca in school without someone wanting to report you to some “authority figures” or suggesting counseling or something. What about Ngosticism, Buddhism, the Yoruba religion and other religions?

If America is serious about this “inclusiveness” thing, we gotta either put it all in, or take it all out. Either introduce children to all religions practiced in America, or none. Maybe religion should be kept out of schools altogether.

Besides, like I recently told my girl Candy, it is my belief that the trend of girls thinking it’s cute to be dumb hos, and boys thinking it’s cool to be pimps, etc…the whole uneven power dynamic that exists in America between men and women is rooted in the Bible. IE, “Introducing…Adam!” And his lowly rib.
