Native Canadians Force Govs Hand In Land Grab

The gist of this story is, a development company wanted to build on some Native Canadian land. The Natives protested – erecting a barricade on and using a backhoe to dig a trench in — the road leading to the land. Righteous!

Candy Minx blogged this Caledonia land claim debacle last week. (Start reading that linked-to time-line from the bottom to get an understanding of the situation.) The Canadian government stopped the construction, and offered the company some money as compensation for not being able to build on the land. I wonder how well this kind of protest would have gone over here?

You know in Canada, settlers and their descendants are called “Non-Natives”? At least that’s the impression I get from reading articles on this Caledonia situation. Caledonia is in Ontario, which sits right on top of the Great Lakes. BTW, Candy is competing with some guy on Technorati so link to her. Tis a good blog!
