All Involved in Rape Scandal Should Go from Penn State Straight to the State Pen!

NOTE: I am writing this post out of anger as a childhood rape survivor. People say you shouldn’t blog when you’re angry but forget what people say because today I am writing this in the interest of reminding people of who the real victims are in this situation. And with that said…

Why in the hell were all you bumbaclaats out in the streets last night protesting the firing of Joe Paterno?

Penn State students protesting the firing of head coach Joe Paterno

Why are you not protesting the turning of your school into a crime scene where a child perpetrator allegedly raped a kid, then had his actions covered up by administrators? Why are you not protesting the pain of the parents who are just finding out that their child may have been raped? Why are you not protesting the many, many psychological, mental and physical effects the rape that allegedly happened on your campus could have on the victim?

For anyone unaware, Paterno aka “Joe Pa,” was fired recently in the wake of a scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who is accused of raping and molesting boys as young as eight, possibly on Penn State’s campus!

An eyewitness, Mike McQueary, alleges he witnessed Sandusky perpetrating a sexual act on a young boy in a Penn State shower room, before turning on his heels and closing the door leaving the child to be hurt and terrorized for only God knows how long. This incident happened in 2002, when McQueary was a graduate student. He says that he then notified Paterno of the assault.

Paterno then reported the alleged incident to the athletic director–and stopped there!

This athletic director, Tim Curley, has recently asked to be placed on administrative leave. He and fellow administrator Gary Schultz are facing perjury charges and charges of failing to report an assault on campus. The National Football Foundation is also withdrawing an award it was planning to present to Curley in light of the scandal.

Sandusky has been indicted on 40 charges ranging from “indecent assault of someone under 16″ and “indecent assault of someone under 13″ to “corruption of minors.” Earlier this week, Sandusky was barred from Penn State’s campus and from being alone with his grandchildren.

I can’t help but wonder, if that boy in the shower had been one of Joe Paterno’s grandchildren, would he have just told the athletic director and stopped pursuing the matter? Would he still feel like he “did what [he] was supposed to do“?

Would McQueary have simply turned and walked out on his mother or girlfriend being raped?

Because the problem in this situation which allowed so many to turn a blind eye to Sandusky’s activities is one of the root problems with society in general, which is: no one gives a damn about horrible things that happen to other people, until those horrible things happen to them.

The accusations and rumors surrounding Sandusky for years were like a sick game of hot potato, with everyone wanting to get the potato out of their hands so they could concentrate on what’s really important–FOOTBALL!

And all the students protesting can think about is how “unfair” it is that “Joe Pa” as he is called will not get to attend his last game as head coach! Many are also upset over the way Paterno was fired (he was fired via a phone call). Well boo-fuckin’-hoo because none of that outweighs the importance of the fact that he failed to report the actions of a suspected pedophile to legal authorities!

At least he was notified that his life was about to change forever in ways that were beyond his control–unlike Sandusky’s victims!

What about the fact that these little boys had to grow up emotionally devastated, with their childhoods and possibly their faith in life and in themselves broken and possibly lost forever? Where is the outrage for the REAL victims?

I say Paterno, McQueary and EVERYONE involved who did not do all they could to stop this child predator needs to be fired, immediately! And if  it’s found in court that they broke any laws, they should all go from Penn State straight to the state pen!

Someone, if not several someones, must pay for this crime. I hope all the victims in this case lawyer up and get what they are due from Penn State and everyone involved!

What are your thought on this scandal? Do people who witness crimes have an obligation to report them?  What more could McQreary and others with knowledge of the abuse have done to stop it? Any other thoughts on this case? Let’s hear ‘em! I’d love to hear from you.
