Sometimes there are moments in life that make you go, “Ohhhhhhhh shit! Why didn’t I get that on film? Or on tape?! Dammit!!!”
Well, kiddies, count your blessings because this rare mixtape is one of those moments that was.
Fortunately for all of us, the man behind the super dope website Galactic Fractures and the equally dope “Soul Touch” jams in Cambridge, Massachusetts (dunno if these parties are still going on, shame if they’re not) was in the house the night Cosmo Baker brought the funk train to Middlesex Lounge and was ready with recording equipment to capture what may be one of the best funk and soul grooves, like…ever.
In true DJ stylee (no, that is not a typo, lol) Cosmo doesn’t include a tracklist with this mix…probably because it wasn’t compiled to be recorded in the first place, which just adds that extra special dash of awesome sauce to the whole endeavor.
The mix is also one whole mix, straight through with no breaks. Definitely not one for you namby-pamby thumb-sucking ninjas out there. It’s serious. Continue reading...
Today I thought I’d post a likkle something for my reggae fans, and that something is DJ Shortkut’s Blunted With A Beat Junkie. If you aren’t familiar with Shortkut, he’s a founding member of the world famous Beat Junkies, a mostly Filipino crew of DJs formed in 1992 in Orange County, California by J-Rocc, an African-American DJ (who hangs out with lots of Pinoys, lol) known for slicing heads worldwide in tablist competitions everywhere.
Shortkut is also a member of the all Filipino tablist crew the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. The crew no longer performs together and gave their final performance in 2000 and many members of the crew have gone on to have solo careers.
This mix CD came out in 2004 so it’s a bit dusty, but since the songs on it are mostly classics–many from the Trojan Records catalog–this mixtape is also timeless. Plus it’s new to you, right? Riiiiight.
And it’s wicked! I don’t even smoke weed but this CD is so fire I get a contact just listening to it! Continue reading...
Leiomy Mizrahi, aka Leyomi Mizrahi aka Leiomy Maldonado from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew takes it to the floor and shows off some of her signature moves in Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” video.
Hair “whipping” and other hair movements have been an integral part of the “new” vogue style for a minute now, especially for dancers in a style of vogue known as “femme vogue”. “Femme vogue” in itself has been around for a while but the “new” style femme voguers like Leiomy have taken it to a differnet level.
Leiomy has been causing a sensation on the underground vogue scene for years and is a pioneer in transgender vogue. I was very pleasantly surprised to see her in Willow’s video. She first comes in very briefly around 1:26 dressed in a white suit as a teacher, then again in red hot pants later in the video, then continues to dance in both outfits. Fierce!
Check her out below.
I can’t believe that video has over 38,000 dislikes on Youtube. I mean, the girl is 10! Haters! Continue reading...
In last week’s HM Mixtape Monday post I told you guys I would be posting something new this week, but over the course of the week I discovered that many people, much to my surprise, were not familiar with the full catalog of a woman many deem one of the best emcees of all time–Lauryn Hill
So I decided this week to post DJ J. Period’s The Best of Lauryn Hill, which is one of the best Lauryn Hill mixtapes I’ve ever heard because of the completeness of it in terms of covering L. Boogie’s material from her first CD with the Fugees, to songs from her multi-platinum Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album to the Fugees last single together, “Take It Easy”, interview clips with Ms. Hill plus a lot more. Many of the songs are remixed by J. Period so they sound completely new.
This CD is actually a double CD set, and it rocks from front to back so if you are a Lauryn Hill fan I know this set will be in your heavy rotation for weeks to come. Continue reading...
Recently, a billboard in Soho, NY announced to passersby that “The Most Dangerous Place For An African-American Is In The Womb“.
Who signed their child up to be the face of this f*ckery?
Though this B.S. billboard has since been taken down due to a riotous uproar from mostly women–of course!–it got me thinking about other places that might theoretically pose hazards for the unborn. Or more specifically, the unconceived.
As it turns out, there is another place that can be quite lethal for half of the genetic material it takes to make a baby—and that place is none other than a white man’s ball-sack.

Of all American men, white men–especially those of Scandanavian descent– are the most likely of any ethnic group to get testicular cancer. And if you’re a young white guy, you are especially at risk as testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer among men ages 15 to 34. Continue reading...
